STICKY ROLLS
Ingredients:
- Yeast bread:
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 package or 1 1/2 Tbs. dry yeast
- 3 Tbs. sugar
- 2 Tbs. shortening or vegetable oil
- 4 - 5 cups flour
- 2 Tsp. salt
Or,
- Easy:
- 3 cans of dinner rolls, approximately 8 rolls per can
And,
- Sticky stuff:
- 1 1/5 sticks butter
- 2-2 1/5 cups brown sugar
- 1-2 cups raisins (optional)
- 1-2 cups walnuts, pecans, or other nuts to taste (optional)
Instructions:
- Bake at 350° for yeast bread, see can for canned. See chart for briquettes required. This recipe is for a 14 inch dutch oven.
- Pre-heat the dutch oven lid by placing charcoal briquettes evenly spaced on the lid and set to the side for 10-15 minutes.
- Light charcoal briquettes 15-20 minutes before needed.
- Follow the instructions for basic bread, bread recipe, or use canned dinner rolls.
- Prepare the dutch oven by lightly greasing, it is best to use butter for this recipe, bottom and 1/2 way up the sides.
- Chunk butter in 1/2 tbs. pieces and spread evenly across the bottom of the dutch oven.
- Spread brown sugar evenly across the bottom of the dutch oven.
- Spread raisins evenly across the bottom of the dutch oven.
- Spread nuts evenly across the bottom of the dutch oven.
- Pinch off golf ball size pieces of dough and shape into balls by stuffing the edges towards the bottom and pinching together. Evenly distribute dough balls in bottom of dutch oven.
- OR, open canned dinner rolls and evenly distribute rolls in bottom of dutch oven.
- Place dutch oven over charcoal briquettes and put lid on.
- Every 5 minutes turn the dutch oven 1/4 turn and turn the lid 1/4 turn the opposite way.
- Bake for approximately 15 minutes. You can tell when the bread is done by tapping on the top, if it sounds hollow it is ready. When cooking in a dutch oven the bread is usually done once you smell it cooking.
- Makes approximately 24 rolls. Serves 12 to 15 people.
The two different approaches, yeast bread or canned, have different advantages. The canned is easy but requires cooler space and so is not particularly workable on longer trips. Using yeast bread may take more preparation time but does not require cooler space and will work on longer trips.
